And one becomes aware that the Hungarian harpsichord player has succeeded in replacing her refined expressive abilities with the dynamics of her touch. The musician played with an airy grace and charm that put even her remarkable perfection of style in second place. It was only her confident smile in the pauses between the works that made it clear that her performance was meant for the audience, and the evening was not just about the merging of music and the soul of an expressive artistic personality. Applause that lasted for minutes saluted the Hungarian soloist whose perfection never appeared sterile, for she always puts musical considerations ahead of technical ones. Mit schwebenden Grazie musizierte die K\u00fcnstlerin, mit einer Anmut, die eine bemerkenswerte spieltechnische Perfektion zur schieren Nebensache werden liess. Nur ein kleines selbstgewisses L\u00e4cheln zwischen den St\u00fccken machte deutlich, dass das Spiel der Ungarin an ein Publikum gerichtet war, und dass der Abend nicht allein aus der Verschmelzung der Musik mit dem interpretatorischen Selbst einer ausdrucksstarken K\u00fcnstlerpers\u00f6hnlichkeit bestand\u2026Minutenlang Beifall der Zuh\u00f6rer gab es f\u00fcr die Darbietungen der ungarischen Solistin, deren Perfektion nie steril wirkte, die musikalische Belange immer vor spieltechnische setzte und sicherlich in der Reihe \u201eMeisterkonzerte\u201d die von der hiesigen Jugendmusikschule veranstaltet wird, eine Sonderstellung einnimmt.\u201d (Freudenstadt)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCDs of Bach\u2019s Goldberg Variations are hardly thin on the ground, but the new recording by the Hungarian harpsichordist Borb\u00e1la Dobozy has something distinctive to say. First of all, she plays a gloriously rich and resonant instrument: a modern Czech replica of a double manual instrument from around 1710 by the German maker Michael Mietke. The original is located int he Charlottenburg Palace in Berlin and belonged to Frederick the Great. It is very likely Bach played it during his visit to the Prussian court in 1747. (\u2026) Dobozy\u2019s playing of the opening theme has a lilting, dream-like quality and the sense of reverie continues throughout all the variations, even in my favorite, the ebullient No. 23. Her playing is marked by graceful articulation, wit and intelligence, as well as the judicious use of ornamentation. I cannot remember last enjoying a performance of the Goldbergs as much as this.
